“Mom-ify” your page.

One thing I’ve learned over the 10 month-long roller coaster ride since my daughter Madelyn was born is that there are DEFINITELY not enough hours in the day anymore. To help other parents out there struggling like I am with a lack of sleep, my colleagues convinced me to share one tidbit of learning on how to save valuable minutes during the first years of parenthood.

I’m a geeky My Yahoo! user, so one of the first things I did during my maternity leave was build a special page full of “mom stuff” to help me keep track of the massive volumes of parenting-related information I was now consuming on a daily basis. The most valuable information I’ve collected on this page are the blogs of my family and friends who are also new moms. Checking out my friend Sheila or Dina’s blogs to see what little Sydney or Jack are up to is usually the best way for me to get a glimpse into what Maddy will probably be doing in the next few weeks.

I’m also more addicted than ever to my digital camera, so of course I check out my Flickr activity at least once a day to see if anyone’s commenting on Maddy’s latest photos (I also set up special modules with each of my sisters’ Flickr feeds, because I don’t want to miss a single new photo of my niece or nephews!). Other tools I can’t live without are my To Do List, Calendar, and the Diet Tracker (still hoping to get into better shape). And last but not least are all the helpful parenting resources and interesting mommy blogs out there like Work It! Mom, BabyCenter’s MOMformation, Shine’s Parenting channel, MomLogic and dooce.

Are you a busy Mom with a My Yahoo! page? Share your ideas in the comments.

  1. This is such a wonderful idea. You are a genius. I would love to mom-ify my page. I on the other hand am not as web or blog savvy. Is there any way you can post some detailed how to instructions for dummies like me?
    Thanks in advance,
    Melissa

  2. Hi Meagan,

I’m a MOMformation contributor and glad to have you as a fan. I started using MyYahoo! last year and love the way it helps me keep track of favorite blogs. I have one page for mom blogs and another that has a techy-slant. It saves so much time because I know longer surf around looking to see who’s updated recently. Love it.

  3. Hi MelissaQ,

I’d start with our tips page, which you can get to by clicking on “Find great tips” in the upper-right part of this page, under Useful Links.

Another thing you might want to check out is the Parents page that our editors put together. You can find that by clicking on “Add Content” from within yor My Yahoo! page, then clicking on the “Packaged Pages” link in the lower right, and then looking for the “Parents” page.

    I hope that helps!

  4. I would love to mom-ify my page more. But I’m a mom of a special needs child. What I was hoping you would consider, is putting special needs options in your avatars, and in your background choices for My Front Page. Especially options that reflect Autism Awareness, such as puzzle pieces (the universal symbol for autism) or the Autism cause ribbon, which is made of multicolored puzzle pieces. There is no avatar gear for moms like me. And there’s no My Front Page background that reflects something so essential to my family experience. Please consider adding such things. It’s really hard to embrace the Yahoo experience, when it doesn’t acknowledge my world.

And I’m not alone. Autism now affects 1 in every 150 children. This is more prevalent than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes, pediatric AIDS, cerebral palsy and Down Syndrome COMBINED. A child is diagnosed with autism about every 20 minutes.

Many parents would greatly appreciate the time and effort you put forth to create something for Autism Awareness (myself included). If you need samples of the Autism Awareness Ribbon, or anything like that, I would be thrilled to help you.

    Thanks for listening.

  5. I would like to know how you got someone else’s flick’r photostream on your My Yahoo! page. There are a few people I would love to get, but I don’t know how.
