A message from the team.

July 15, 2008 on 1:34 pm |

Hello My Yahoo! users,

As planned, we transitioned everyone to the new My Yahoo! yesterday. We’re excited about this version because it provides a solid foundation for us to more quickly innovate and respond to your needs and requests. We still have a lot more in store for the product, and will be continuously improving it with the additional display controls and module enhancements that we know are important to you.

Some of you have asked if you can return to the original My Yahoo!. Going forward, we are entirely focused on the new version so that we can create the best overall experience for you. Therefore, the original My Yahoo! has been retired.

We’ve been diligently following all of your feedback, and appreciate you taking the time to share your ideas with us. We’ll continue to use this blog and the feedback page to gather your input and keep you informed of the things we are working on for you – so please stay tuned!

Regards,

The My Yahoo! Team

  1. I am sorry but your instructions do not work. For instance, trying to change content in the Personal Assistant module, clicking on the gear button reveals a list of possible content items, but there is no “Preference, settings and save” words displayed. Cannot change content. James

    Congratulations!

  3. Please at least leave the option of the old site. Thanks.

  4. Everone I know hates the new My Yahoo. This was a very bad move on Yahoos behalf. You should have kept the option to use the original.

  5. James, the module menus are contextual. So in some cases (if the module has more customization options), you will see more menu choices. Apologies for the confusion.

  6. The original My Yahoo was so much more functional. I’m disappointed with the new My Yahoo and wish I could go back.

  7. You look like a hard working group and the New Yahoo pages are a little cleaner.

I was satisfied with what I had. The new page does not get to what I am looking for. Two examples; first I do not need an arrow to tell me if a stock is “up” or “down” when the change is either green (up) or red (down). This is redundant information and only there because you can do it. In this same vein, the percent change is of no interest to a long term investor. When I consider a stock trade I would look at much more.

Second, I like a five day of weather forecast. Not sure how and where I will find it.

Third, (I know I said two examples, but this is just so typical). The results of the golf tournment, which concluded on Sunday, are still on the screen. OLD NEWS.

I have spent my career transmitting information. Too much is as bad as too little.

I wonder who was guiding you in these changes. Don’t be Microsoft. They want to run everyones life. At best I say Get Back Jack.

I wish I could subscribe and pay and not have the distraction of all the ads. But I suppose I would not want to pay much.

  8. I know you worked hard on it, but it’s harder to read than the old one and requires more scrolling. I’ll try it for a few days. I have used my.yahoo as my home page since 1999 and tried the beta for a week before reverting to the old look.

  11. Some people just hate change. I have been using the new My Yahoo since they gave you the option to try it out. I think it is great…much better and cleaner looking than the original. Give it a chance people….things are a lot easier than they seem. Stop making life so difficult.

  12. I have been happily using the new version for months and have only one real complaint. It’s July 16 and att.my.yahoo.com still has the very annoying ad in the way. Why does this only seen to be happening with att??? Any suggestions?

    Comment by Lurline — July 16, 2008 #

  13. Will the cm part of the web address be removed in time, so that I still go to my.yahoo.com. or is the new page always going to be cm.my.yahoo.com? Just wondering?

Also, is it possible to add more two tone colors that have a greater degree of contrast? Sometimes the new pages are harder to read due to colors.

    Comment by Richard — July 16, 2008 #

  14. The new page would be okay if it had all the options the old one had. Font size and style, header and subheader font and color, and the option to move the yahoo search bar to the bottom of the page.

  19. I see so many people complaining about the new My Yahoo, but I think it’s a great improvement! I look forward to the future enhancements!

  20. The new version does have cleaner lines and perhaps more white space than the previous. But some functionality is missing.

Example - I have some RSS feeds and I keep them on a minimized mode. In the older version, there would be a note indicating if there was no incoming item for the past 24 hrs. In the new version, I don’t see it.

This means that I have to click on each RSS link to view it and if it takes more than 10 seconds to load (displaying “loading”), I assume that there was no feed for the past 24 hrs. This means spending time investigating each link wheraas in the past, the visual note would suffice.

How do I get that “no item for the past 24 hrs” note back again ?

  21. For those with ad questions… Together with our broadband partners we are evaluating the current advertising approach in their portals. We intend to continue to adjust our advertising approach over time to maintain the appropriate balance between user experience and advertiser solutions.

  22. I love MyYahoo. I tried to replicate all the things I do on MyYahoo on Google’s site and only got about half to work and what did work looked cheap and unfinished. Keep up the great work!

  23. Great job on the new My Yahoo, guys and gals! I have one request: I want to force every link to the Yahoo Reader. Some links direct me to the original site instead.

thanks and keep up the good work.

  24. Just because they switched over don’t mean they are sitting on it. I see things that can make it better, and in time they will, also. So I’m watching and waiting.

  25. Yahoo maps is very difficult to use compared to the original. I like the idea of simply entering the address and seeing the map.

  26. I don’t mind the new yahoo (even if I was a fan of the old one). Still, anyone else has got that annoying message since they switched to the new one ?
“We are sorry, your bookmarks are currently unavailable. Please go to Yahoo! Bookmarks”

I mean, that was THE feature that I loved in my yahoo, having all my bookmarks online and now, zilch.

  27. I loved the original My Yahoo and I also love the new My Yahoo, been using it for a while now. It compare favorable to iGoogle, but I hope to see a much larger selection of content/gadgets/styles availabe in the near future. Keep up the good work!

  28. A mea culpa: I must say I was ranting and raving when you made the changeover. I hated the new site; I couldn’t figure out the calendar and I had thought I had lost my whole summer schedule. But now that I’ve dug deeper and figured out the calendar and how to manage my home page, I’m actually very happy with the new site. I still would have been very content with the old site, but this new one is very nice and functional.

  29. My beef is the capability to view daily market charts. I use to be able to see what was happening on any stock or index I choose. Now I can only see a chart of the Dow Jones index. I don’t own the Dow - let me chart the S&P, or Wilshire 5000, or the price of a stock I own - NOT the Dow.

    Comment by dave — July 17, 2008 #

  30. In the stock portfolios, I would much rather have the asterisk to tell me that there is news for a company than the red or green arrow. Also, I would like to be able to customize the content so that I can eliminate the display of the percentage change in stock value.
I would also like the ability to display the times in my time zone, rather than PKT.
I would preferto be able to limit the number of days of weather information displayed. Today is fine. If I’m traveling to another city, I can click to find out 5 days worth.

Well done! If I were still there, I’d be raising my glass to toast your hard work!

  33. I never said the old version was better, new version is way better in my opinion, it uses the technologies in recent browsers which all should upgrade.
I said “better feature freeze old version” and “give people a choice”, even if it is 10% people hates the new version, it is a matter of taste. Tell them basically “We won’t be adding features to the old version”, it is called “feature freeze”, it is very common in open source, I bet you know already.

  34. Face it, the old one is gone forever! Yahoo!

    Comment by Mackian — July 18, 2008 #

  35. I don’t care much for the new look with all the extra white space. It may look pretty but one gets much less information density on the page and you have to scroll much more. I can live with that but what makes the new page essentially unusable for me is that when you click a link to view a story and then click on the back button to return to MyYahoo page, you are always returned to the top of the page not where you were on the page. I spend more time scrolling than reading content - very unacceptable. This problem is present in Firefox and not IE. The old MyYahoo page worked perfectly with Firefox. Please, please fix this so I don’t have to find a new home page. Thank you.

    Comment by Mack — July 21, 2008 #

  41. I like the new MyYahoo page. However, as another comment already mentioned, I’d like to see more entries (30-50) for my RSS feeds.

And the TV listings are still awful. Sorry.

    All-in-all good work.

  42. The new MY Yahoo is great. I just configured the modules which are awesome. There are so many options for content. the Gmail and Facebook, and all the news content- terriffic. I’ve used yahoo for a decade now and this is the best I’ve seen it. I’ve set it as my homepage and will likely use it everyday. Yahoo Team, thanks for your hard work!

  43. When I type a feedback and then click on “Send Feedback” I get sent to a blank page. Did my feedback die there. No acknowledgment the feedback was ever delivered. My feedback was one of many complaints about the lack of font options.

  44. I was about the 5,000th to sign up for the original my.yahoo some 8 or 9 years ago, and up until last spring, I had a 3 digit password to prove it.

I didn’t like the new my.yahoo when it premiered in Beta, but I did make suggestions and the new my.yahoo is workable and still maintains the Yahoo “touch”. Good job team.

My big question is where is the advertising??? Since about the cutover, I get no banner ads. I don’t want to look a gift horse in the mouth, but whats the story? BTW, I did suggest that Yahoo! should offer a “pay-for-portal” option…as I would pay good money (that doesn’t mean a lot of money) to have a ad-free portal with the Yahoo powered back end.

    Comment by Greg — July 27, 2008 #

  45. I think the looks of the new website are great, however, I do not like the fact that it doesn’t give the amount of e-mails I have at a quick glance and it also makes it harder to set up your personal homepage.
I wish you well, but hope you can add some polishing touches to these changes.
