It’s official! We’re out of Beta.
July 7, 2008 on 2:45 pm |
Hi everyone,
Every day, we try to create the best possible My Yahoo! experience for you. Throughout the course of the “beta” phase for the new My Yahoo!, we read your constructive feedback on how to improve the product. Much of your feedback has been related to your ability to control your page. As a result, we are changing and evolving our approach to advertising on My Yahoo!.
Less Intrusive Advertising
If you use the new version, the current advertising unit that you are accustomed to seeing on your page has been removed. We feel that this will enable you to better control the layout of content on your page. As we continue to improve the product, we will be examining alternative ways to find the right balance between advertising and the best possible My Yahoo! user experience.
Retiring the Original My Yahoo!
In addition, we want to let you know that on July 14th we will be retiring the original My Yahoo! and moving everyone into the new version. At that point, access to the original My Yahoo! will no longer be enabled. The new version of My Yahoo! was built for you and similar to our recent advertising change, we will remain committed to improving the product based on your feedback.
If you haven’t had time to explore the new My Yahoo! yet, we invite you to check out these tips we created to help get you started and make this transition as easy as possible for people who are accustomed to the original My Yahoo!.
Enjoy the new space!

Good job overall! BUT, there were features in the “old” My Yahoo that are not present in the new one that I am REALLY missing:
1) More than 10 entries in a module.
2) Images with every headline & not just with the first.
I hope development hasn’t completely ceased.

Congratulations! Taking the Ad out is HUGE too!
Comment by Michael — July 7, 2008 #
Please enable bright colors for visited links in ALL of the color schemes available. Thank You.
Comment by Richard Koeppel — July 7, 2008 #
Woo Hoo! I was surprised to see that big advert gone! It drove me to distraction..most of the time it didn’t load properly and was stuck looking at web page not found..I would like to see more themes one day…Great job!
Comment by Linda — July 7, 2008 #
Finally, we have no Ads on our personal start page. Great job!
Comment by fmatthews — July 7, 2008 #
congratulations on out of beta.
advertising is good…one liners vs. blocks? no pop ins…I would totally drop my yahoo if random ads popped into the page, even hover-over expanding pops.
Comment by Ann — July 7, 2008 #
I have AT&T Yahoo DSL- my version of the page still has the big left column ad. When will this one go away?
Comment by =bg= — July 7, 2008 #
One of the few complaints that I had about the new My Yahoo was the huge block of advertising. With that gone the page is perfect!I think Yahoo is doing a good job. With the removal of the advertising it shows that they are listening.
Comment by Rebecca Oshea — July 8, 2008 #
Great not having the ad block-makes page even more useful not having it take up valuable space.

I like the new yahoo but one problem, home page is to wide it extends pass the right side of my moniter there should be a way to make it fit to regfular size.
Comment by Ruben — July 8, 2008 #
Another thing…an option for the layout would be two equally sized columns rather than the ones that you have currently would be welcomed. You could also use a one column layout to take up the width of the page, that would be especially helpful for TV Listings, Movie Listings, really anything that has a calendar like format.
Comment by Wendy — July 8, 2008 #
Any chance I could move that big search box to the bottom, like I did with the old My Yahoo? My browser already has a built-in search box; I don’t need another one taking up vertical space.
Comment by Jason — July 8, 2008 #
Additional features in the “old” my yahoo that are not present:
1) Charts in Market summary
2) Ability to add market index from different exchanges not just DJIA, nasdaq and S&P.
i think this is a big mistake.
Comment by Nathan — July 8, 2008 #
When will the stock market summary (Dow/Nasdaq/S&P indices) be real time vs. delayed by 10 minutes? I’m surprised the new version would be delayed when the old version was not… Otherwise, the new MyYahoo keeps getting beter. Thanks.
Comment by RJG — July 8, 2008 #
I use beta since when I first heard it and on my machines, it is not a problem but… people should really have a choice to use “Classic” original My.yahoo
Why don’t you feature freeze it and keep for people who wants to keep using that light version?
Comment by Ilgaz — July 8, 2008 #
Well I knew that it would happen sooner than later. It is not that I don’t like change it is just that being the person of habit that my Mother raised me to be, it is just really difficult to make any sort of conversions. But I will work with what you and the good Lord has given to me and try not to complain, (too much.) Thank you for being there as long as you have been.

I want to “Edit Module Preferences” on some of my modules but the only option I am given is “Email this module to a friend.”
Comment by Fido — July 9, 2008 #
By the way, Firefox with Adblock plus got rid of the ads on the old version of My Yahoo.
Comment by james — July 9, 2008 #
The font is just not right. The center column is too narrow, while the two side columns are too wide. Too much wasted space at the top of the screen. AWFUL!
Comment by james — July 9, 2008 #
can not change lay out so left colume is narrow and right colume is wide. I want to see tv guide with more than two hours showing. I hope you will continue to make changes based on users needs.
thanks

Will I be able to keep all my data that is on My Yahoo at this time???????????????????
Comment by Bill Krueger — July 9, 2008 #
Thank God that huge pig of an ad is finally gone. Now all we need are more themes, more control over the width of columns and a much better PA (choice of the number of tabs is essential). Also, is the Suggestions area closed for good? I can’t seem to find it.
Comment by Jeff — July 10, 2008 #
Is there a way to customize the new My Yahoo like there was with the old My Yahoo? Are those colors the only ones available? I think there should be a
choice as there is now, so a person can still use the old My Yahoo! so at least the user still has a choice.
Comment by Anne Maurer — July 10, 2008 #
Hello,
Like some of these suggestiong. Such as:
More colors scemes
more control over layout & width of columes
choise for “classic” original-my favorite
Thank you for less adds.

Hi
Long time fan of MyYahoo and have been “really trying” to enjoy the new framework but still a few things are bothering me.
1- ability to change font color
2- ability to change theme colors
Any chance we will be seeing these features come back?
Comment by ymx — July 11, 2008 #
No problems with the new Yahoo except for changing colors. I like all of the old options as to customizing the color schemes. Any chance that will come back?

all of us that know about ads!
I think Yahoo has captured the hearts of the majority of internet users, don’t sell us out to Microsoft!!!!……….Love and all our support…….hang in there.Yahoo…..

Only have one complaint. Not enough options for font. In fact, no option at all on Firefox 3. The Standard to Large doesn’t change a thing.
Comment by Mackian — July 13, 2008 #
I have ATT yahoo dsl also and still have the ads
Comment by Darlene — July 13, 2008 #
The new homepage is HUGE. I HATE IT!!! Can we resize it some how? I hate having to use the full screen on my browser. With my normal browser size I have to use the horizontal scroll to see all the content on the new Yahoopage. Most websites I visit resize to the browser window…why can’t you guys? Surely that’s not beyond your abilities. I liked the old one much better! Loads so dang slow, too.
Color me unimpressed.
Comment by Mac's Girl — July 13, 2008 #
The page is too wide for my parent’s monitor (1024p). Its extremly annoying. If I cant figure out how to make it skinnier in the 2 column format, I’ll be switching them to MSN…
Comment by Anthony — July 13, 2008 #
Honestly, I liked my old layout. I couldn’t care less about new functions, and am switching because I am forced to. I guess I’ll get used to the new layout, but I don’t like being forced to change.
Comment by Rick — July 14, 2008 #
I don’t mind it, it just doesn’t fit my monitor screen, and second the only way to remove things from the page is to “delete” them. Why can’t they just be removed like they can be added. I don’t need alot of stuff in the “personal Assistance” Area, I don’t deal with H. Scopes, Lottery or music. I don’t mind the Mail, weather, etc but you should still be able to remove like you can add. Also if I don’t want long boxes then they should be able to be shortened.
Otherwise not bad, But I wouldn’t give it a 10 on a scale more like a 5/6
Comment by Destiny — July 14, 2008 #
My Yahoo! has been optimized for 1024 x 768 and higher screen resolutions. If you’re having to scroll horizontally to see content, try these suggestions:

Echoing what Nathan listed above, “Market Summary” in old page was a lot better. I had customized to show several graphs and prices (DJ, NASD, SP500, and Wilshire). Being a big finance user, this is a pretty limiting change for me
Comment by Ramo — July 14, 2008 #
I prefer the classic original format, and don’t want to take the time to configure and re-learn the new. I don’t see it offering any added value! Why not offer both?
Comment by Bogo — July 14, 2008 #
Count me among the many who do not care for the “new” myyahoo. I don’t mind the old ads so much and really need the ability to have a wider column for things like my comics and tv listings. I also need the charts for the Dow, etc. as well as stock preferences. I also liked my old background and colors.
And… echoing the thoughts of many of us - please don’t sell us out to Microsoft!!!
Comment by Linda — July 14, 2008 #
I preferred the old version but will get used to the new one. The one thing that is a BIG problem for me is that the old version displayed perfectly on my WI-FI PDA with an Opera browser, and the new version is not supported. So no My Yahoo while traveling. I will miss that. Please support Opera with the new version.
Comment by MikeC — July 14, 2008 #
My only gripe is the “new mail” doesn’t stand out enough to catch my eye… so instead of just seeing it every time i log in i have to look for it… blah. Thanks for getting rid of the ad though, i suppose i can live with the new version then.
Comment by TIM — July 14, 2008 #
Please continue development to support older, faster, browsers including Netscape 7.2 — without Flash Player. I only use Internet Explorer or Flash when I absolutely have to. And My Yahoo! is optional.
Comment by Dave, S. — July 14, 2008 #
Honestly, I liked my old layout. I paste stock quotes into excel a few times a day. Now this function does not work with the new layout. This is a big inconvenience to me! I depended on yahoo for this wonderful feature, now I don’t know what to do. I don’t like being forced to look for another site to perform this, since I can’t make the new format work. Even though there may be some added value to others, there seems to be plenty of people who prefer the classic original format,… Why not offer both?!!! Please help us out here! :o) I really wish I could continue to use Yahoo.
Comment by Stuart C — July 14, 2008 #
What happened to the Evite module?
What happened to setting custom colors for the layout? I’m sorry but I used to use a darkened version of Olive, and now everything is super obnoxiously bright. It looks like kids on myspace designed most of the layouts.
Please, tell me there is still a way to switch back to classic?
http://cm.my.yahoo.com/switch
doesn’t seem to be working anymore?
Comment by Jon — July 14, 2008 #
I like the new format, but it doesn’t work on my smartphone, IE for Windows Mobile, 5.0.
Is there any fix?

Remember when Coca-Cola tried to impose New Coke on everyone?
That’s what new My Yahoo is like.
Comment by james — July 15, 2008 #
Stocks are a problem now.
The original My Yahoo! market summary was up to the minute for Dow, NASDAQ and S&P every time you reloaded the page. The new MY is way behind. You have to click through to an individual index’s page for the latest.
It’s like New Coke leaving an aftertaste?
Comment by Dave, S. — July 15, 2008 #
Stock modules can’t be edited?
When I click on the “gear” icon to “Edit Module Preferences” for Market Summary or Portfolios, I get a panel allowing me to share the module with the canned message, “I have this module on My Yahoo! and thought you might like it, too.” I do not get an opportunity to actually edit preferences or content of the module.
This must be a bug.
Ooooh, look, I found a bug in my New Coke.

We still have a lot more in store for the product, and will be continuously improving it with the additional display controls and module enhancements that we know are important to you. [...]

I like the new my Yahoo, but I just recently was able to afford to switch to broadband. It comes in through a dish. I live in a rural area and most people I know have dial up around here on very old, analog phone lines. No fiber - optic here! I could not load Beta *anything* on dial up. I take it people who are stuck with dial up are just being tossed by the wayside? We were lucky to get 26.6 Kbps on a GOOD day.
Comment by Nancy — July 15, 2008 #
Adam,
Please offer your customers the option of using the original version of MyYahoo. This can be accomplished by adding a “classic view” or “old school” version to your Beta format selections.
I have been a loyal Yahoo customer since it’s existance. Please consider this suggestion strongly, as I am considering switching from using Yahoo as my Homepage.
Comment by Terry — July 15, 2008 #
And BTW who ever paid attention to the ad(s) anyway!
Comment by Bill — July 15, 2008 #
The limit of 10 headlines is almost a dealbreaker for me - why change from before? Overall it is an improvement though, the tabs were needed a while ago.
Comment by thiel — July 15, 2008 #
I think it’s the trend on all commercial pages: They make it hard to view it except on full screen…so they can expose you to the maximum number of ads or messages possible. SPRINT did the same when they “updated” their page. The sign-in is all the way to the right and if you don’t use full screen you have to scroll to the right - before the sign-in was at the left edge, so no matter what size your browser was set, the sign-in window was right there, no need for horizontal scrolling.
Oh! well it’s free they say
Comment by GeorgeB — July 15, 2008 #
If you are a stock trader it stinks. I will have to find something else. I don’t have time for this, too slow and not user friendly
Comment by karen — July 15, 2008 #
I import data from my yahoo stock portfolio to Excel using Excel’s import tool. In the old version of Yahoo, Excel would highlight the table containing my portfolio and the table would be imported to my spreadsheet as shown in Yahoo. In the new version the table is highlighted as before but along with the portfolio data I also get a lot of extraneous text that does not show on the yahoo page. The table I want is buried in all this. I am sure I am not the only one doing this. Why did this get changed?
Comment by Russ — July 16, 2008 #
I have made a lot of suggestions and comments, and I’m sure some of them will eventually show up in the options on the home page. They are not just sitting on the new Yahoo, so just keep watching.
Comment by Mackian — July 16, 2008 #
The old version would mark a stock symbol with an asterisk when the stock had a news item posted within the past 24 hours. The new version does not do that; it has annoying white cartoon boxes next to the symbols. Now I have to click each symbol to determine if a news item has been recently posted (or otherwise hold my cursor over the white cartoon boxes and wait for the recent news to load!) and this is very inefficient and time consuming. Please mark the symbols again when a recent news item is posted so I can hone in on it!!!!
Comment by pat — July 17, 2008 #
Where does the indicator appear showing a stock has a recent news story, like the previous My Yahoo!?

How can I have a module span three columns at the bottom of my page? (TV listings)
Comment by Scott — July 17, 2008 #
the minus sign is missing from the stock change value as well. this makes copy and paste worthless.
Comment by Darrel — July 17, 2008 #
The missing AD is geat. I do not like the new mail much… when i click on In box for mail takes forever to open another page? Why ? Should it not just open? Also everytime i try to do anything it says at the bottom” waiting for yeildmanger…. ? Keep trying tho - ya’ll git er done some day!
Comment by GJ Mitchell — July 17, 2008 #
TV listing on myway.com spans the whole screen, and you can high light your favorites in red.
Comment by Mackian — July 18, 2008 #
last message from me. i finally fixed my page. one of the content modules was way too wide and thus stretced out my page (the music videos module). once i deleted it everything shrunk down exactly the way it should. now my page looks great and actually a lot better than the original my yahoo. play around with your modules a bit till you get what you want is the best advice i can give.
And yahoo! Fix this issue up and just give us the option to resize our modules manually please!

I can’t get my Mail to show up on my home page. This is a very important item for me. I’ve tried searching for Mail Preview but it comes up with two results but neither of them will open. Also I now have 5 My New Tabs at the top of the page - how do I delete them? Thanks for the help. I kinda liked your old page better. Sorry.

I use three columns without scrolling. They fit just right.
Comment by Mack — July 20, 2008 #
Looks nice, but when using Firefox and returning to the home page after having navigated off the page to read and article or whatever, it always snaps to the top of the page. It doesn’t matter how far down the home page you’ve scrolled, when you navigate back to the home page, it always starts you back up at the top. Very irritating - I don’t use Yahoo much anymore because of this.
Comment by Mark — July 20, 2008 #
To add your Yahoo! Mail Preview, click “Add Content” > “My Yahoo! Essentials” > “Yahoo! Mail Preview” > “I’m Done”.
To delete a tab, click on the tab name of the tab you would like to delete. An “x” will appear next to the tab name. Click the “x” to delete.

Is there any way to stop the page from always starting at the top of the page, after returning from a link that you have read? Its so annoying having to navigate the site every time you read an article to find where you where up to. Tend to just give up after a few times.
