TV fans: you spoke, we listened!

Your feedback on our first attempt at new TV Listings was emphatic: it was too big, too clunky, and too limiting. So guess what we’ve done over the past few weeks? We rebuilt it, taking into account the things you asked for.

We’ve fixed several things
• The listings grid recognizes your theme and better fits into various column layouts.
• We revised the prime time defaults (8 p.m for ET and PT, 7 p.m. for CMT).
• If you click on a show and come back, the listings now “remember” where you were.
• Your favorite channels on Yahoo! TV will appear in your TV Listings on My Yahoo!.

We’ve also given you a lot more control
• Want a grid that suits your layout? You choose to display 1, 2, or 3 hours at a time.
• Are you a night-owl or an early bird? Set “primetime” to be any time you want!
• You can choose to have the listings start out at primetime OR at the current time, and then use the “Now” and “My Primetime” links to jump between them.
• Seeing wrong times at the top of the listings? We now show you the time zone associated with your account and give you a link to the profile page where you can update it.

(Just click on the “Module Options” gear icon to adjust any of these settings.)

We’ve got more work to do
In some browsers, there are display issues if you have too many hours in a grid that is too narrow. If this is just too much to bear, consider moving the listings to a wider column or use the “Module Options” to display fewer hours.

Some of you are still having trouble finding listings for your area, and we’re sorry about that. We are working with the listings data provider to sort these out on a case-by-case basis.

And we are working with the team over at Yahoo! TV to increase the number of show titles that have links to more detail. Please stay tuned.

Thanks for using My Yahoo! and enjoy the new listings!

  1. For those of us in Arizona, the prime time fixed listings at 8pm are not accurate. Prime time here starts at 7pm, and since we don’t change our clocks for DST we’re not always on the same schedule as the west coast feeds.

Why not allow users to determine the time period displayed on our home pages rather than having it fixed?

  2. Thank you. Works like a charm and the rest of the new Yahoo is great too.

  3. How about the ability to hover your mouse over a TV show and have a small pop up contain some of the show highlights (much like the news article highlights)?

  4. Much better…thank you!! Now when you get the “more detail” thing worked out, it will be GREAT!

  5. […] Primetime on your time: Based on your suggestions, we made some updates to our TV listings on My Yahoo!. You can now see a listing grid that recognizes your layout theme and fits into your columns. Your go-to channels on Yahoo! TV will appear automatically on your TV listings as well. We didn’t stop there. You can now choose a grid that suits your My Yahoo! layout by displaying 1, 2, or 3-hour blocks of shows and set “primetime” to whatever time you want during the day. There’s more, read about all the updates here. […]

  6. Hi James,the product mngr.

I really want you to pick up DemocracyNow.org for your prgm schedule. I love that program and most of Free Speech TV/Village TV. Also we very much need you to include a local community channel so we can get instant community information and instant emergency information. This featur is very important in this day of terrorism; as is DemocracyNow.org, which is equally important.
Also conside more overseas news. BBC is great for that, but more sources are needed.
Plea consider sources such as Al-Jazeera so we can try to understand what is going on in the Middle East countries. This info now seems far more important than ever. I’m totally sick of Britney Spears.

    Sincerely,
    Bob DAmico

  8. @Adam: I’m sorry that we’re not getting it quite right for the folks in Arizona, but the good news is that we did exactly what you asked for–you can now choose the time your listings start. Just click on the “module options” icon (the gear at the top) and choose your start time.

  9. I have attempted 3 or 4 times to choose and save my preferred channels and have only them listed.
However, each time my choices were not saved.
    Now what do I do?

  11. Please add AT&T U-verse IPTV channel listings.

  12. The TV listings have been messed up the past 2 days. All of my selected channels do not show up OR the programs. I looked at the module options but my selections had not changed.

    Thank you.

  14. TV listings are working fine now. Thank you.

  15. I second Will’s request–listings for AT&T U-verse IPTV channel listings. I’m in the 77082 zip code. It would make sense for these listings to also be connected to the U-Verse DVR scheduling.

  16. I am in Queen Creek AZ which is out south east of Phoenix. I get some Tucson staions as well as all the Phoenix stations and one from Presscott yet my antena viewing options are only some Phoenix and northern Az stations. Local channels 3 KTVK and 45 KUTP aren’t even offered as local favorites instead for 3 I get KFTU and 45 KPDF, both spanish staions I can’t even pick up. On the other hand I do get channel 9 KGUN from Tucson as well as others like their PBS station and other local network affiliates.

Is there any way to adjust my listings for favorites to at least correct my local favorites and at the most give a joint Phoenix/Tucson listing? I am sure folks in Casa Grande and other comunities between the two metropolitan areas are in the same boat.

  17. TV Listings are now great! Thanks so much for listening and responding. Now, I’m ready to switch to Beta. I love the increased user-control and options for making my page truly be my page. I like the drag and drop simplicity. I like the whole page. I’m impressed. Thanks!

  18. How about a full screen view option with the ability to remove and restore each channel, and a customizable number of rows and columns displayed? Google advanced search power of the listings plus +/-, AND/OR/NOT/EXACT keyword functionality. An AT&T program (lightweight) with continual listing indexing. Streaming TV through the My Yahoo! page with full screen toggle similar to YouTube. Adjustable resolution stream for HD monitors or for slower systems. Category organization of channels/content. User correction or addition feedback for content that lists incorrectly or lacking information. User “star” ratings similar to Yahoo Answers!

  19. Come on guys, how can you like the new listings? They’re just fluffy remakes of the old broken 2nd generation My Yahoo. 90% of the listings still don’t have a details link to click on and none tell you if it’s a repeat like the 1st generation My Yahoo TV Listings did. Stop pandering to their egos and tell them what’s broken. Me personally, I never look the listings here any more, I use Media Center on my Vista Ultimate system (available on Vista Home Premium as well) and it works 100% of the time and gives me descriptions and tells me if it’s a repeat. Too bad MS didn’t end up with Yahoo, perhaps they could have incorporated a bit of Vista Media Center into My Yahoo.
