Improved: Stock Portfolios

If you’ve been using the Stock Portfolios to monitor the ups and downs of your investments, we’ve got some new features for you to play with!

Quick information. Just place your cursor on the callout next to the ticker symbol in your portfolio, and intraday charts and news headlines will appear in a hover bubble.

Organize to your heart’s content. Create multiple portfolios and categorize your stocks however you want… ”long term”, “short term”, “401K”, “just watching”…or whatever works for you. Each portfolio accommodates cash positions and tallies things up to show a cumulative gain/loss.

Easy data entry. Editing the information in each portfolio is MUCH easier than before. Just click “edit” and enter your data.

Bunch more stuff. Now you get % change (in addition to value change), an up/down indicator, a refresh link, and support for international equities and foreign exchange rates.

While we can’t promise better value performance of your portfolio, we do think that keeping an eye on it will be much easier.

This is one of our most popular modules and we’re excited to provide you with some enhancements. Your ideas have been very helpful, keep them coming.

Happy investing!

As has been suggested several times previously, the asterisk is a very important feature in the portfolio view. Without it, I would have to go through all my stocks to see if there was current news…not a good use of my time! Please restore this feature.

Also, why the up and down arrows if you are using red and green to show the result…seems like overkill to me…either one or the other would be fine, why are both necessary?

Can I exclude the percentage gain or loss? I really don’t care about percentage loss on a daily basis

Please also make the entire view smaller so it doesn’t crowd out other areas of the front page

To make this useful, let your users decide how they want their portfolios to look…either allow them to exclude % or arrow and add asterisk..

As you said this is one of the most popular modules but you don’t appear to have responded to any of the suggestions made by people on the suggestion forum

Can you add a way to show the index name… like “Dow Jones” instead of ^DJIA. Old MyYahoo had this and it was easier to read at a glance. Thanks

Please follow through with Ann’s suggestions (8/16/07). Most important of her points is the removal of the arrows and % gain/loss. Thanks.

I agree with Alan that it would be a lot simpler to show the index name rather that the code. Also i quite like the % gain. Thanks.

Real-Time quotes is a paid-for feature. I’m appalled at the carelessness implied by the failure to include this. If you don’t care about your paying customers, soon you won’t have any to worry about.

There used to be a module that displayed the latest news headline for all the stocks in your portfolio in a wide-column space on my My Yahoo page. That appears to have stopped working. Does this still exist? If so, where can I find it. I find this at-a-glance view really useful, and it would be a huge pain to recreate on a stock-by-stock basis.

I agree with RichM – the module that displayed the latest news headlines for all the stocks in my portfolio was something that I used on a daily basis. What happened to this module?

I also miss that module with the latest stock news for my portfolio. Hopefully it’ll be back soon so I don’t have to set up a new home page. Yahoo! was good for that.

Thank you all for the great ideas to make the Stock Portfolio module even better! We have been working on your suggestions and you’ll see a few of them soon. In fact, you will find the headlines module some of you asked about in the coming days as the new and improved Company News module. I will post a link here for you to add the module when it is available. Stay tuned!

thanks for the upgrade – first impressions good. Thanks for the % stock gain/loss – much needed. What I’m missing now is the module providing news feeds on stocks I hold… :-(

Thanks, Jason, for returning the Company News module. How can one get the callout to appear next to the ticker symbol?

Can I change the column defaults when I view my portfolio on my home page? I would like to see my daily percent change vs. yesterday.

Jason – it is nice to know news can still be found but it is still not easy to know what to look for. I have hundreds of symbols in 40+ portfolios. It really is necessary to have an asterisk or flag to indicate WHICH stocks have news. I also want this to be in the MY PORTFOLIOS module. I want to see, at a glance, if there is news that explains a move in one of my stocks!

It is a huge takeaway not to have stocks with news FLAGGED. Without that capability I will not use My Yahoo as my home page–it is a make or break feature for me. I can navigate to anything else that I might want to put on my MY Yahoo home page, but that is the one single thing I need to see when I land on my home page.

I do like the % Chg showing. Can I add other fields to show in the MY PORTFOLIOS module?

I can no longer get my portfolios. It just hangs and hangs when I click. I was able to start a new portfolio but after entering info, it too hangs. Has there been a change in something. Thank you. Paul H.

The upper and lower limit reminders are gone! I used them every day. Can you put this essential feature back in? You can bold the price instead of the symbol. Also support other users who say that some of the columns are redundant – ideally we would choose what we want.

Finally the Market Summary module appears to no longer be customised with different indexes/timeframes?

Please return the * to the stock portfolio. The asterisk notifies the user that there is a news story. Without the asterisk, you will lose subscribers.

I absolutely agree with all comments regarding the * indicator for recent company news. I’m already looking at switching to google after being with yahoo for many years.

If you’re going to force users to switch to the new version, at least support all the old functionality.

Ok, looks like you need to add the ‘company news’ module and then select the ‘portfolios’ button. Once you have your portfolio list, click the little arrow beside the portfolio name and you’ll get all the recent news for your portfolio sorted by most recent.

Some form of indicator (asterix, or color change) in the ’stock portfolios’ module would still be desirable.

A comment for the designers.. this should be the default view when you add the module (with the portfolios expanded).

I too agree with many who have posted here. I have made My Yahoo my home page since the mid-nineties. The key feature for me is the * to indicate new news for the day for a given stock symbol. Without this Yahoo will lose loyal eyeballs–and we all know it is all about advertising $. I see we will be forced to the new page in a couple of days. I have put off moving up until now.

Figured there would be a thread on this somewhere.

Now I remember why I didn’t switch to the new format… no asterix for new news. I’ve been using My Yahoo for 10 years and been very happy! In fact, it’s really my principle reason for visiting Yahoo and keeping my yahoo email.

I looked at Google a couple years ago, but didn’t care for it. Now I guess I’ll look again.

Please fix the “new news asterix” issue.

Thank you.

Have been using My Yahoo as home screen for years. How can I print hardcopy of your new version?

Having the portfolio shown without the asterisks marking news events makes it impossible to track breaking news stories on stocks listed within the porfilio function. The older version of the portfolio was much, much, better than what is currently being provided. Sometimes when things aren’t broke, it doesn’t pay to fix them. The portfolio format now is just about useless for watching stocks on an intraday basis without an asterisk function to track news events. Don’t need the up/down arrows either, just having the stock marked in red or green gives a better snapshot. Please fix this.

Thank you
